Your Skin & The Sun

How is it that on a sunny day when I apply my sunscreen I still get a little colour?

No sunscreen is 100% effective at blocking out all of the UV rays.

Factor 30+ and upwards broad spectrum is recommended.

Factor 30 prevents 97% of UVB Rays

Factor 50 prevents 98% of UVB Rays

Factor 100 prevents 99% of UVB Rays

When correctly used sunscreen with an SPF of values between 30-50 offers enough sunburn protection even for people most sensitive to sun exposure

Some Fun Facts about Sun Safety

  1. Sun Protection Factor (SPF)  measures only UVB Rays

  2. Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) measures both UVA + UVB Rays

  3. Presently there are only two sunscreen ingredients that are recognised as safe and effective by the FDA. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide

  4. Dark or bright coloured clothes keep the UV rays from reaching your skin by absorbing them rather than allowing them to penetrate.

  5. Loose fitting clothes are best. When a fabric is stretched it reduced the level of protection offered because when the fabric is pulled the fibres separate and UV rays can get through.

Worried about not getting your Vitamin D?

The sun is one of the sources of Vitamin D that it is why it is called the “Sunshine Vitamin” However it also can cause skin cancer and premature aging.

The American Association of Dermatology advises against sun exposure or tanning beds for getting your Vitamin D.  The focus should be more on foods that provide natural sources of Vitamin D and Vitamin D supplements.

Fatty Fish: salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines

Vitamin D is also found in mushrooms, egg yolks and drinks that are fortified with Vit D like milk, orange juice etc.

NOT SO FUN FACTS:

5% of UV rays are UVB rays. These have shorter but higher energy levels than UVA and typically damage the outer layers of your skin causing burning

The remaining 95% of UV rays that reach the ground are UVA rays.

UVA Rays can penetrate our skin at its deepest levels causing damage to our DNA resulting in premature aging of our skin.

UVA Rays can penetrate glass. So, if you enjoy your morning coffee in your conservatory, spend a lot of time in your car commuting or if your office is close to a window, you are being exposed to these damaging UVA rays and you are aging…!

Beyond Sunscreen

It is important not to rely on SPF alone. No single method of sun defence can protect you 100%. Sunscreen is just one vital part of the overall strategy. Because our face, neck, decollete and hands are the most exposed areas of our bodies on a daily basis they need to be protected against not only UV rays but extremes of temperature like the cold and wind.

The best protection against UV rays is to

  1. Cover up with clothes

  2. Wear a hat

  3. Stay in the shade

  4. Wearing sunglasses will protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes also

  5. Reapply your sun protection every 2 hours or more frequently if you are in water, exercising or sweating
