Why Light Therpies Fascinate Me!!
For those of us who remember the singer songwriter of the 70s Barry Manilow he’s hit song of 1973 “Could it be magic” just popped into my mind as I sit to write this blog on Light Therapy.
Light Therapy fascinates me. It is so underused and undervalued as a therapy for wound healing, pain reduction and of course anti-aging. We have all heard about how space technology can benefit us all here on earth. Believe it or not we have NASA to thank for discovering LED light therapy over 50 years ago.
They needed to produce light without added heat for space missions and plant experiments and discovered the effects of LED light on cell growth. Although their studies focused on wound healing and plant growth at the space station and on earth rather than on antiaging benefits their experiments proved a staggering 150-200% increase in cell growth when cells were exposed to light. They discovered that when our cells absorb the light energy, collagen production and wound healing are activated.
"So, let’s explore LED light therapy and its amazing benefits for age prevention and skin healing. "
So, what is LED (Light Emitting Diodes) light therapy.
LED is painless, even relaxing skin care treatment that plumps up aging skin by boosting our collagen production. It falls under the visible light spectrum and comes in many colours and the three I am going to focus on in this blog are Yellow, Red and Blue. LED light therapy can be used on all skin types from the most sensitive to severe acne conditions. Unlike Ultravoilet light it does not have heat or cause damage to the skin. LED lights also have different wavelengths. Blue light has a wavelength of 470nm. Yellow Light 590nm, and Red light 603-700nm. The different wavelengths determine the skin conditions that are influenced by the treatment.
So, we now know that LED light therapy enhances cellular metabolism, accelerates the repair of damaged skin cells, and stimulates collagen production.
HELLO…if that’s not enough to have us running for an LED light therapy treatment to regain our skins youthfulness…!!
What Can They Do?
So, lets take a closer look at what each colour light offers
Yellow LED light encompasses all the benefits of Red LED light. It continues to play a vital role in skin healing and skin cell regeneration. However, because Yellow LED light is absorbed by body fluids the stimulation of the lymph and blood circulation aids in the anti-inflammatory benefits that Yellow LED provides. Also, its shallow penetration on the skin makes it more suitable for treating inflammatory skin issues such as Rosacea, or any forms of visible redness on the skin.

Blue LED light is excellent for acne. Acne is a very common condition affecting 85% of young people under 25 years of age and 50% of adults aged over 25. It develops what the sebaceous glands in a person’s skin produce too much sebum (oil). The sebum clogs the skin pores and the bacteria ( P.acnes bacteria) that’s found in the skin gets clogged in the pores. Blue LED light is most suitable for treating Acne because it kills the P.acnes bacteria that cause acne. The blue light penetrates superficially into the follicle helping to destroy the P.acnes bacteria. It also calms the sebaceous glands helping to minimising oil and sebum production. It is beneficial in reducing redness and irritation and promotes healing of scars which are an unfortunate result of the damage that can occur from acne.

As we age the amount of collagen in our skin diminishes and the skin becomes less flexible. The result is drier thinner skin as our body’s natural regeneration process declines the skin loses its ability to retain moisture. Red LED light stimulates the fibroblast cells. These are the same cells that produces the collagen that gives young skin its plump look. It is powerfully effective in restoring loss of firmness in the skin, minimising fine lines and wrinkles, and restores the skins radiance.
