Diathermy TreatmentIs it all, what it is cracked up to be?

Telangiectasia is the medical term for what we in the non-medical world refer to as broken capillaries, broken veins, thread veins and spider veins.

Typically, they appear on the legs but more commonly on the face neck and decollete. All of us will experience these veins in our lifetime. They are an evolutionary process and even though they are associated with skin aging there can also be other factors that contribute to the appearance of these broken capillaries on our skin.

Broken capillaries on the body especially the legs have their own story to tell, and their causes are a lot more complex.

In this blog I am going to focus on broken capillaries on the face neck and decollete area. These are the areas that are most visible and cause the most distress to clients

 What are Broken Capillaries?

Broken capillaries can appear on any skin type and for many different reasons. In a young child it is not uncommon to see a “Spider Naevi”. This is a trauma mark that looks like a red dot with little legs running away from it. These can be caused by something as simple as a scratch.

This trauma can also occur in adults especially if they have an active lifestyle and play sports. Some clients can even experience a Spider Naevi on the bridge of their nose from the constant wearing of eye glasses.

A person who has a very fair Fitzpatrick skin type 1 or 2 (Red hair, white Celtic skin,) is also going to be more vulnerable to developing broken capillaries.

UVA Damage

UV rays are very damaging for all skin types but if a client is fair skinned over her life time she will definitely be more vulnerable to developing broken capillaries or a more serious condition called Rosacea.

Broken capillaries do not go away on their own. There is a treatment called “Diathermy” which is a very safe and effective treatment for broken capillaries.

Diathermy Treatment & You

The diathermy treatment uses a short wave current and the heat from the current cauterises the broken capillaries allowing the broken capillaries to heal and fade away. It is a non-surgical procedure but does however require a full consultation and a patch test prior to your treatment.

The Diathermy treatment takes approximately 30 min.  After the treatment the area will be red and feel a little hot.  The client will be advised of aftercare to reduce any risk of infection and to promote healing.

  1. Not to go swimming or use a sauna or steam room for 7 days

  2. Not to go running or vigorous exercise immediately after the treatment

  3. Not to wear foundation make up for 48 hours

  4. Not to apply a sunscreen for 48 hours

  5. Not to cleanse the skin for 48 hours

  6. To liberally apply  only the healing gel prescribed on the area for the first 48 hours

All areas of the face, neck and decollete can be treated with diathermy. Broken capillaries can appear on the eye lids, ears or even in the nose.

A full consultation and patch test is required prior to your Diathermy treatment.
