IPL Hair Removal

Unwanted hair growth

The human body contains 5,000,000 hair follicles and while body hair can be annoying it does serve a purpose. Hair helps to regulate body temperature keeping us warm in the winter and cooling us down in the summer. It protects the body from environmental dangers such as UV and blocks impurities from entering our bodies from the air we breathe.

Wanting to rid ourselves of face and body hair is not new. Since ancient times hair was considered ugly and uncivilised. Dating as far back as 3000 BC women in ancient Egypt, Rome and Indian cultures practiced the removal of hair using tools and methods such as sugar, pumice stones, cotton threads, copper, and seashells. OUCH!  The first razors made from copper originated in Egypt and India in 3000 BC. Some of these practices continue to this day such as the modern-day practice of threading and sugaring.

Fast forward to the 40’s where the wartime shortage of nylon meant that women couldn’t wear stockings every day revealing exposed legs. The introduction of the “Bikini” in 1946 set the stage for women focusing on pubic hair and the 60’s saw the hemlines rise with the introduction of the mini skirt threatening to reveal hairy legs.

So why are we in such a hurry to rid ourselves of our hair? All in the name of Beauty of course!

IPL Laser hair removal exploded onto the market approx. 25 years ago and it has proved itself to be the saviour of unwanted hair growth for a generation of women and men. At first it was exclusive to medial professions and clinics but in time it filtered into the aesthetic marketplace and pricing became more affordable.

Fast forward to today and it is the most favoured treatment for hair removal. Millions of us now use laser hair removal for permanent hair removal solutions.

All areas of the body can be treated with IPL laser, and it is especially effective for treating larger areas like the legs, bikini line, underarms, and face.  It is also a popular choice for our male clients for treating excess chest and back hair.

Does IPL Laser Hair Removal have limitations?

IPL laser hair removal does have some limitations, however. Hairs that have less pigment such as blonde and red hair cannot be treated as effectively. The pigment in the hair (Melanin) is how the light from the IPL laser handpiece enters the hair follicle. The less pigment the less the light is absorbed, and the heat is too weak to effectively destroy the hair cells that make the hair grow.

Skin colour is also a consideration when deciding on IPL laser as a solution to your hair removal. Darker skin naturally has more pigment and the IPL hair removal handpiece must be adjusted to a lower setting in some cases also making the treatment less effective.

To date IPL laser Hair Removal has proven itself to be effective, painless and the modern-day Male and Females answer to a very ancient problem.

I think Cleopatra would have approved.
